But this problem is not gender-centric. At times, even men can be the victims of emotional abuse. All relationships have issues, but being abused is something that should not be accepted. Deal with it at the right time or else you will be stuck in a rut for life.
Know the signs and make It known
It is important to know what an abusive relationship actually is. Is your boyfriend/girlfriend isolating you from others or is jealous without any reason? Do they take control of your finances and bank accounts despite you being capable enough to do the same? Are they intimidating and shout without any reason? If you have experienced any of the above, then you surely are in an abusive relationship. Most of the times, these are just the initial signs and it aggravates him/her to become physically abusive as well. Recognise such behaviour and don't succumb to every torture they put you through. The best way to tackle the situation would be to talk to a close friend or with a family member, because keeping such things a secret is extremely unhealthy.
Talk it out
If you think your partner is the best, but is just short tempered, then talk it out with them. Choose a right place and moment before confronting him/her instead of doing this amidst a fight. Discuss in a calm manner and let them know what you disapprove. Make sure you are assertive that his/her behaviour with you is unacceptable. Never reciprocate their foul behaviour.
Seek help if you can't tackle
Go to a counsellor for help. Never blame yourself for your partner's behaviour. If possible, go for couple counselling. This, to an extent, might tackle the issue. Remember. Don't stay in denial of what is happening to you.
Walk out with dignity
If nothing works, it is best to walk out of the relationship. You should realise that your self esteem matters the most and you shouldn't allow anyone to walk over you as if you are a doormat. You tried to change the situation, but if it didn't work, accept it and move on before it's too late.
