Ghost Towns of the World

Believe it or not, there is a lot of ghost town in the world, reasons for abandonment are many, here is some for me, most interesting examples:

Agdam, Azerbaijan

Agdam is a town in the southwestern part of Azerbaijan and the capital of its Agdam Rayon. In July 1993, after heavy fighting, Agdam was captured by the forces of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic during its 1993 summer offensives. As the town fell, its entire population fled eastwards. In the immediate aftermath of the fighting, the Armenian forces decided to destroy much of Agdam to prevent its recapture by Azerbaijan. More damage occurred in the following decades when the deserted town was looted for building materials. Agdam is currently a ruinous, uninhabited ghost town.

Humberstone and Santa Laura, Chile

Humberstone, Chile, was founded in 1862 as the nitrate mining center of Oficina La Palma. In 1925, it was renamed Humberstone after the British mine manager who bolstered the small town’s wealth. The towns were left to sit as they were when the last residents left, the dry sand from the encroaching desert drifting through the abandoned school and the theater.

Mandu, India

Mandu occupies an entire hilltop that was once a fort. Long before the Afghans overran India, Mandu was built by Hindu princes. Completion of the hilltop fort involved a century of moving large rocks from many miles away. When the Afghans conquered Mandu they rebuilt with the already existing buildings serving as their stone supply. Little that was Hindu architecture is left. Presently there are Afghan and Mogul ruins. source

Oradour-sur-Glane, France

The small village of Oradour-sur-Glane, France, is the setting of unspeakable horror. During World War II, 642 residents were massacred by German soldiers as punishment for the French Resistance. The Germans had initially intended to target nearby Oradour-sur-Vayres and mistakenly invaded Oradour-sur-Glane on June 10th 1944.

Its ruins still stand today as a memorial to the dead and a reminder of the events that took place.source

Ordos, China

Founded in February of 2001, Ordos, whose name translates from the Mongolian into “palaces,” is an enigmatic riddle.
Filled with office towers, administrative centers, government buildings, museums, theaters, sports fields and acres of subdivisions bursting with residential space, there remains only one small problem. No one lives there!
